As we prepared to decorate the Christmas tree this year, something felt missing — the warm, festive scent that makes the season feel complete. I realized we needed a simple holiday aroma to fill the house.
Potpourri might feel nostalgic to some of us, conjuring images from decades past, but homemade simmering potpourri is an easy, natural way to bring a cozy Christmas fragrance into your home. No store-bought bags required.

Christmas potpourri blends bright citrus, warm spices and fresh greenery to create that classic holiday scent. It’s simple to make on the stove or in a slow cooker, and it can scent your home for hours while you wrap gifts or decorate.
This version uses common ingredients — citrus, cinnamon, pine, ginger, apple and cranberries — for a cheerful, unmistakably Christmas aroma.
Christmas Potpourri Ingredients
-
Citrus (orange and lemon)
-

How To Make Christmas Potpourri
To make this simmering potpourri, add the prepared ingredients to a saucepan with water, bring to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer. Let it simmer gently for several hours to release the fragrance. You can refresh the water as needed to maintain the scent.

If you prefer not to use the stove, you can set all ingredients in a crock pot on low for several hours. Stir occasionally and add water if needed. A slow cooker keeps the scent consistent and requires less attention.
This homemade potpourri is perfect for holiday parties, tree decorating days, or any winter afternoon when you want your home to smell like Christmas. We plan to make it a seasonal tradition.
