On a recent dinner outing with my niece Elizabeth—who’s always game to try new cocktails—I watched her order a lemon sage martini. Curious, I tasted it and knew I had to recreate it. This version is simple to make at home, elegant enough for a dinner party, and delightful to sip any evening.

What is Limoncello?

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur known for its intense lemon aroma and bright citrus flavor. Traditionally produced in southern Italy, it’s made by steeping lemon peels in high-proof alcohol to extract essential oils, then sweetening the infusion with simple syrup. Chilled limoncello is often served as a digestif, but it also shines in cocktails, adding a lively, sweet-tart lemon character.

Helpful tips

  • Wash citrus before juicing or using as a garnish. For a quick clean, rub the fruit with unscented soap and a vegetable brush, then rinse thoroughly under cold water.
  • If you prefer, use a coarse cloth designed for scrubbing fruit under running water to remove any residue from the peel.
  • Any good-quality limoncello will work. Use the brand you like and adjust lemon juice if the liqueur is very sweet.
  • Gently roll sage leaves between your palms before garnishing to release their essential oils and heighten the herbal aroma.
  • Make the cocktail mix ahead of time and refrigerate; shake with ice just before serving to chill and dilute properly.
  • Chilling martini glasses beforehand helps keep the drink colder longer and improves the presentation.
  • Taste and adjust: balance of sweet, sour, and alcohol strength can be tailored to personal preference.
  • Vodka is traditional for this recipe, but gin is a lovely alternative if you prefer more botanical complexity.

Food pairings

This martini pairs well with light appetizers: seafood, fresh cheeses, or pasta with simple, lemon-forward sauces. It complements dishes that highlight bright, fresh flavors without overpowering them.
