Ham and Cheese Crescent Rolls Recipe

Warm ham and cheese roll-ups spread with creamy ranch dressing and finished with a sweet brown sugar-poppy seed glaze have become a family favorite. They’re easy to prepare, full of flavor, and ideal as a quick lunch, weeknight dinner, or party finger food.

The method is straightforward: unroll refrigerated crescent dough (or use thin-crust pizza dough), spread ranch evenly, layer ham and cheese, roll it up, slice into 12 pieces and arrange them in a 9×13 baking dish. Top with a glaze made from brown sugar, melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and poppy seeds, then bake until golden brown.

I love that this recipe delivers a protein-packed meal kids enjoy eating and that it fits well into busy schedules. These ham and cheese roll-ups are comforting, shareable, and bake up quickly—perfect when you want something satisfying without a lot of fuss.

As a farming family, we appreciate that pork today is leaner than in previous decades and provides several important nutrients. Whether served as these roll-ups or in other recipes, pork is a versatile ingredient that supports many easy, family-friendly meals.

We often pair these pinwheels with other simple bites like salami roll-ups or ham balls for a party spread. The same filling can be used to make chilled tortilla roll-ups if you skip the glaze and serve them cold—slice into small rounds for appetizers or add to a charcuterie board.

Glazed Ham Pinwheels

These glazed pinwheels were inspired by Hawaiian roll ham sliders but use refrigerated dough for a different texture and presentation. The glaze adds a sweet-savory finish that makes the pinwheels special without adding extra work.

Pinwheels are attractive on a platter and easy to eat. They work well as a main for a casual meal or as part of an appetizer spread. If you bake them, the glaze caramelizes slightly and creates a glossy, flavorful topping.

Crescent Roll Dough Versus Pizza Dough

Crescent roll dough yields lighter, flakier pinwheels that pair nicely with breakfast casseroles or brunch dishes. Thin-crust pizza dough makes heartier rolls with more bread, which some prefer for a filling lunch or dinner.

My kids liken the flavor to pancake-like sweetness with savory ham—an endorsement in our house. If you want a more substantial bite, use pizza dough; if you want something lighter and flakier, use crescent dough.

How to Make Ham and Cheese Roll Ups

Use a large cutting board or baking sheet to unroll the crescent dough or thin-crust pizza dough.

Spread ranch dressing in an even layer over the dough. Arrange half of the ham slices over the dough, covering both short ends and one long side but leaving about an inch free along the opposite long edge.

Add a layer of cheese on top of the ham, then top with the remaining ham. Start rolling from the long edge that has the ham and cheese flush with the edge. Roll tightly and finish with the seam on the bottom.

Trim and slice the roll into 12 even pieces. Place each piece on its side in a lightly greased 9×13 pan so the spiral is visible on top. The rolls will expand as they bake, so don’t be concerned if they seem small at first.

To make the glaze, melt butter and stir in brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and poppy seeds. Spoon or brush the glaze over the tops of the roll-ups so each piece is coated.

Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the glaze is bubbling. Serve warm for best flavor and texture. Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator and can be reheated.

Tips for Making Ham Roll-Ups

  • Use shredded cheese instead of sliced, spreading it evenly across the dough.
  • Cheddar, Colby Jack, or provolone are good substitutes for Swiss.
  • If you don’t have ranch dressing, mix dry ranch seasoning into the glaze and pour it over the rolls before baking.
  • Let ham and cheese sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before assembling to help the rolls bake more quickly and evenly.
  • Keep the dough cold until you’re ready to work with it for easier rolling.
  • Leave about an inch free along one long edge when layering so the roll seals cleanly.

More Easy Family Meals with Pork:

  • Instant Pot Pork Chops with sauerkraut, apples and bacon.
  • Kielbasa and Sauerkraut, a simple classic.
  • Farmhouse Ham Loaf for an easy, slightly fancier meal.
  • Tender Country-Style Ribs and Sauerkraut for minimal-effort comfort food.
