Christmas Funfetti Cookies Recipe: Festive Sprinkle Sugar Cookies

Christmas Funfetti Cookies are super soft and chewy, filled with rich butter and vanilla flavor and studded with festive sprinkles. They’re an easy, joyful holiday treat when you want something simple, delicious, and fun.

With or without sprinkles, this is a favorite vanilla sugar cookie recipe. The cookies develop a lightly crisp edge while remaining soft and chewy inside, and the butter and vanilla really shine through.

The secret to the tender texture is the combination of melted butter and cream cheese. The dough comes together quickly—about 10 minutes of active work—but chilling it for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 days) is important to prevent excessive spreading during baking.

I used a mix of tiny nonpareils and red-and-green jimmies, but any colorful sprinkles will work. Rolling the dough balls in extra sprinkles is optional: it adds a festive crunch and extra color, so you can do half sprinkled and half plain if you like to give everyone a choice.

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the sugar, melted butter, vegetable oil, and softened cream cheese on high for 60 seconds.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla; beat for 30 seconds more until combined.
  4. Switch to the paddle attachment and add the dry ingredients, mixing on low until a moist dough forms. Fold in the sprinkles just until evenly distributed.
  5. Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll tablespoon-sized balls of dough and place them at least 3 inches apart on the sheets. If desired, roll the balls in extra sprinkles before baking.
  8. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove when the edges are just lightly golden and the centers still look slightly underdone—the cookies will finish setting as they cool.
  9. Cool on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 6 weeks.
