I still follow many of the restaurants and bars from my Southern California days on social media. A few months ago Tony’s Darts Away shared a BBQ ranch curly fry appetizer that caught my eye, and I saved it to recreate at home. This version swaps melted cheese sauce for young jackfruit browned and simmered in barbecue sauce, which mimics the texture and flavor of pulled barbecue chicken. I’ve also included a cashew-based vegan ranch adapted from Vegan Yack Attack’s Plant-Based Meal Prep for those who want to make it from scratch.

Instead of a cheese sauce, the shredded young jackfruit is sautéed until it browns slightly, then tossed with barbecue sauce for a tangy, smoky topping. The fries are seasoned with a smoky spice blend so each bite is flavorful, and a drizzle of creamy ranch ties everything together. Serve hot and garnish with sliced green onions for brightness.

Substitutions + Tips:

  • Fries – Frozen crinkle-cut fries work well, but shoestring, curly, waffle, or steak-cut fries are all fine. Adjust baking time to match the package instructions and the fry style.
  • Young jackfruit – Use canned young/green jackfruit in brine. When prepared and shredded, it resembles soft pulled chicken or pork.
  • Barbecue sauce – Check labels to ensure the sauce is vegan (some contain Worcestershire sauce or honey).
  • Ranch – A homemade cashew-based ranch is included, but store-bought vegan ranch is a quick alternative.
  • Spice blend – Grinding the spices finer (with a mortar and pestle or spice/coffee grinder) helps them stick to the fries for better coverage.
  • Herbs – Green onions add freshness; cilantro also pairs nicely if you prefer.
  • For casual serving, present the loaded fries on the same sheet pan the fries baked on. They’re an ideal shareable appetizer.
  • Pair with a lighter beer such as a lager, pale ale, or a dry cider to complement the smoky, tangy flavors.

Because I follow hockey closely, every day can feel like game day — which is perfect for trying appetizers like these. If you enjoy loaded fries, you might also like the Mushroom Asado Fries for another savory, crowd-pleasing option.

Ingredients

Cashew Ranch from Vegan Yack Attack’s Plant-Based Meal Prep (makes 2 cups [475 ml])

  • 7/8 cup (120 g) raw cashews
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Fry Base

  • 2 pounds (907 g) frozen fries (crinkle cut, shoestring, etc.)
  • 2 teaspoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ancho chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

BBQ Jackfruit

  • 14-ounce (397 g) can young/green jackfruit, drained
  • 2 teaspoons mild-flavored cooking oil
  • 1/3 cup (32 g) diced yellow onion
  • 1/3 cup (78 ml) barbecue sauce

Fry Assembly

  • 1/3 cup (78 ml) vegan ranch, or more to taste
  • 1/3 cup (78 ml) barbecue sauce, or more to taste
  • 3 tablespoons (4 g) diced green onion

Instructions

  1. For the ranch: If making at home, place cashews in a small pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until softened, about 5 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.
  2. Transfer the cashews to a blender with 1 cup (235 ml) water, vinegar, lemon juice, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Blend until smooth, let sit 5 minutes, then blend again until very smooth. The ranch will thicken when chilled. Store in the refrigerator up to 10 days.
  3. For the fries: Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place fries in a large bowl. Combine the fry spices, grind fine if possible, then toss with the fries to coat evenly.
  4. Spread fries in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, or follow package directions, until edges start to brown.
  5. For the jackfruit: While fries bake, drain the jackfruit and pull it apart with your fingers in a colander. Rinse and press to remove excess moisture.
  6. Heat oil in a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté 5 minutes. Add jackfruit in an even layer and sauté about 12 minutes, stirring only every few minutes so the jackfruit browns and dries slightly.
  7. When the jackfruit edges have browned, stir in 1/3 cup (78 ml) barbecue sauce to coat. Reduce heat to low to keep warm while fries finish baking.
  8. To assemble: When fries reach the desired color and texture, leave them on the sheet pan or transfer to a platter. Sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt, top with shredded BBQ jackfruit, drizzle with vegan ranch and extra barbecue sauce, garnish with green onions, and serve hot.
