When you want to enjoy rich, chocolatey flavor, these classic frosted fudge brownies made from scratch are a perfect choice. They combine a fudgy interior, a slightly crisp top, and a glossy homemade chocolate frosting for a truly satisfying treat.

Brownies have been a beloved favorite since childhood for many of us. Their dense, chewy texture and deep chocolate taste make them irresistible, especially the center pieces that stay soft and gooey. This recipe aims to recreate that nostalgic comfort with straightforward ingredients and simple steps.

For me, brownies also carry memories. My mother always measured ingredients with care and insisted on chopped walnuts in her brownies. To her, walnuts were essential, and their nutty crunch became part of the signature texture. These walnut-topped brownies bring back those cozy family moments.

These brownies are especially indulgent thanks to the smooth chocolate frosting spread over the warm, slightly cooled bars. Each bite balances fudgy cake, a hint of walnut, and a silky topping — absolutely delicious and perfect for sharing or savoring on your own.

Classic Frosted Fudge Brownies Recipe

Prep time: 15 minutes
Bake time: 22–26 minutes
Yields: 12–16 brownies

Ingredients

Brownies

1 cup unsalted butter
2 cups granulated sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Frosting

1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1–1½ cups powdered sugar, sifted as needed
3 tbsp whole milk (add more to adjust consistency)

Supplies

8″x8″ baking dish lined with parchment paper
Mixer or mixing spoons and bowls
Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

1) Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8″x8″ baking dish with parchment paper, letting some paper hang over the edges for easy removal.

2) In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each, then stir in the vanilla.

3) Gradually fold in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt until the batter is just combined. Avoid over-mixing to keep the brownies tender.

4) Gently fold in the chopped walnuts and chocolate chips with a spatula or fork.

5) Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and bake for 22–26 minutes. The center should still be slightly soft; the brownies will continue to set as they cool.

6) While the brownies cool, make the frosting. Beat together the butter and cocoa powder until smooth. Gradually add one cup of powdered sugar and spoon in the milk, mixing until you reach a spreadable consistency. Add more powdered sugar to thicken or a splash more milk to thin, if needed.

7) Once the brownies are cool to the touch, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Allow the frosting to set briefly, then lift the brownies from the pan using the parchment overhang and cut into squares.
